CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“OPERATION TRINITY”

“Colonel, it sounds like a war zone. What…”

The next part of the message became lost in the static. “Shit!” he exclaimed, “This is fucking ridiculous. We’re in the middle of what is like a fucking war zone and I can’t even get a message through to Washington. It’s no good!”

He yelled at the driver and said, “Get me back to the base. I need to speak directly to Washington. This Mickey Mouse radio is no fucking good at all!”

With that, he switched off the radio in disgust and the vehicle did a quick 180 degree turn and sped back along the highway towards the airbase.

He stared into the door mirror at the scene of devastation behind. He could not get his head around what was happening. He had just witnessed the strange attack on men and materials and couldn’t understand what had caused it. It was like nothing on earth. A strange thought then occurred to him; what if it wasn’t terrestrial? A shudder now ran down his spine that was difficult to suppress. Perhaps that was the big secret? Well secret or no, the cat was out of the proverbial bag now, he thought.

His deliberations were interrupted by the sudden collapse of a number of buildings as the steel reinforcements were eaten away by the microscopic attacking machines. Masonry dust flew skywards as the building collapsed in a massive dust cloud and the remains became covered in a dry fog. His involuntary shudder had been noted by the young driver. He had seen the Colonel in all sorts of moods and situations, but had never witnessed such a look of horror and shock mixed with frustration etched into his face so clearly. This worried him as he knew that if it was serious enough to have caused such a reaction in his commanding officer, then it was really serious. If you added to that the abortive attempt to try to contact Washington, then there had to be a problem of massive proportions. The sheer scale and rapidity with which the carnage had unfolded back in the town was testimony to that.

The car continued travel at high speed along the highway and was soon back at the airbase. The sentries on duty quickly checked their passes and waved them through the barrier and they headed towards the main administration building where the Colonel’s office was located. As soon as they pulled up, the Colonel jumped out of the car and headed into the building, past the rapidly saluting guards on duty, who were barely acknowledged by Lawton in his haste.

He burst into the outer office, surprising the officer on duty.

“Sir?” queried the Lieutenant, but Lawton just replied, “Get Washington on the horn immediately and put it through to my desk phone. I want full encryption,” and then he went straight into his office.

He reached his office chair and sat down with a jolt and marshalled his thoughts. It wasn’t long before the telephone rang and he answered it immediately.
